Red light therapy devices and infrared saunas are both popular wellness tools, but they operate differently and offer distinct benefits. Here at Kiva Wellness, we are lovers of both, for different reasons. Read on to discover the differences and how to seamlessly integrate them into your at-home wellness and recovery routine.
What is a Red Light Therapy device?
Red light therapy devices emit energy within the visible red and near-infrared (IR-A) spectrum to penetrate the skin and be absorbed by cells. This light energy does not generate heat, avoiding an increase in the body's core temperature. Instead, it is delivered non-invasively and absorbed by the cells' mitochondria, boosting their ability to produce energy through ATP production. Red light therapy promotes healing, reduces inflammation, and stimulates collagen production. Typically used for targeted treatments on specific body areas, such as the face, joints, or muscles, sessions are usually short, lasting from a few minutes to about 20 minutes. The devices vary in size according to the light-emitting surface, and the distance between the device's surface and the body affects the light intensity received. Common applications include improving skin health by reducing wrinkles and fine lines, providing pain relief, aiding muscle recovery, and enhancing overall cellular health.
What is an Infrared Sauna?
An infrared sauna uses infrared heaters to emit infrared light, which is absorbed by the skin, heating the body directly rather than warming the surrounding air. This allows for deeper tissue penetration, resulting in effective detoxification, improved circulation, relaxation, and pain relief. Far-infrared only saunas use far-infrared light (5,000 to 10,000 nanometers) to penetrate up to 1.5 inches into the bodyโs tissues, offering deep tissue healing and detoxification with gentle heat. In contrast, full spectrum saunas utilise a combination of near-infrared, mid-infrared, and far-infrared wavelengths. Near-infrared targets skin and shallow tissues, enhancing skin health and wound healing; mid-infrared penetrates deeper to improve circulation and reduce inflammation and far-infrared provides the deepest penetration for detoxification and deep tissue healing. Full spectrum saunas offer a wider range of health benefits, including skin rejuvenation, improved circulation, pain relief, muscle recovery, and overall relaxation, due to their comprehensive wavelength coverage.
Here at Kiva Wellness, we give you the option of combining both of the above therapies into one session. Our full spectrum radiance saunas now feature a plug outlet which allows for our Radiance Sauna Red Light Therapy Panel to plug directly into your sauna. This means you are able to experience the unique benefits from a Red Light Therapy device within your Infrared Sauna, simultaneously. Saving you time!
